EngTec were approached by Australian Museum to undertake a chilled water plant and DDC controls upgrade to reduce the energy usage in the building under an EOH energy audit and upgrade in NSW government buildings. This building stores and exhibits natural history and a Collection valued at over $3 billion dollars including critical storage areas which require 24/7 cooling.

A review of the entire mechanical plant identified opportunities to upgrade the chillers, pumps, and control strategies to reduce energy usage.

Through detailed analysis and energy modelling of the chilled water plant and cooling demands, the mechanical plant was reconfigured, upgraded, and optimised to incorporate high efficiency water cooled chillers. The chillers were specifically designed to operate within the low load profile and for the peak demand for high efficiency to minimise energy usage.

The DDC controls were upgraded including specific energy plant manage strategies to maximise the plants COP and maintain temperature control of the Galleries and the critical Collection storage areas.

The Solution

A review of the entire mechanical plant identified opportunities to upgrade the chillers, pumps, and control strategies to reduce energy usage.

Through detailed analysis and energy modelling of the chilled water plant and cooling demands, the mechanical plant was reconfigured, upgraded, and optimized to incorporate high efficiency water cooled chillers. The chillers were specifically designed to operate within the low load profile and for the peak demand for high efficiency to minimize energy usage.

The DDC controls were upgraded including specific energy plant manage strategies to maximize the plants COP and maintain temperature control of the Galleries and the critical Collection storage areas.

The Outcome

The combined energy reduction of the hotel and precinct is now 23% equating to approximately $350,000 per annum on operating costs and 1,040 tonnes of CO2 reduction.

The EOH undertook monitor and verified the significant energy savings and the Museum was awarded Small Business Energy Award by EOH, NSW Government in 2013 for the project.
